The Meaning of Love Letters

Romancing someone is not always done face to face. Some people prefer to express their romantic feelings in a love letter. Very often it is preferable to some people to put pen to paper when expressing feelings of love. Look at all the great poets and novelists such as Shakespeare who put down their romantic thoughts on paper. This is also a much more comfortable way of expressing one’s feelings in an indirect rather then in a direct manner.

Someone with deep emotional feelings would often feel more comfortable if they could personalize their feelings for someone else by writing down their thoughts on paper.  This in turn has led to the writing of love poems, sonnets and love letters which are and always have been an expression of human emotion. In times gone by before the dawning of the era of electronics and computer technology love letters played a significant role where romance or feelings of affection were involved. For people living distances apart from each other and wishing to stay in contact there was no other or better way of communication. At one stage in human history writing love letters was considered to be a form of folk art in some countries such as Germany. Many letters used to be painted on expensive paper and were often scented when written by a lady to someone she felt deeply about. Very often love letters were burnt if relationships were ended or holding on to them had the potential to create an embarrassing or compromising situation.

Love letters can be written in any shape or form. The importance of these letters lies not in their structure but in the content and genuine sincerity of the writer who has committed his or her feelings in the permanent form of a love letter. Even today with the huge advance in telecommunications one is still able to purchase stationery which is specifically manufactured for the purpose of writing a love letter.

Letters expressing human emotions of love, loneliness, longing, sadness and happiness have always been an outlet whereby human expression could be made in a written form. They will continue to play a part in this and future generations.
