Valentines Day

In modern times February 14th Valentines Day is celebrated as a renewal and remembrance of love that people share with each other. This tradition often results in exchanging of gifts between couples as a token of their love and continuing commitment to each other.

The origins of valentine day dates back from the times of the Roman Empire when the emperor Claudius ordered the execution of a roman priest Valentine who had converted to Christianity instead of adhering to roman paganism. While in prison awaiting execution Valentine became friends with his jailer’s daughter and there was often an exchange of notes between them with him signing the notes to her as being from her valentine. It is also believed that he performed a miracle on her by curing her of the blindness from which she suffered.

Many years later the Pope Gelatius in honor of this Christian martyr declared that Valentine be honored as a saint and since that time St Valentine has been regarded as the patron saint of lovers.

While to a huge extent this day has become much commercialized and is known now to be one of the busiest shopping days of the year, the true origin and meaning of Valentines Day should always be remembered by lovers throughout all generations.
