Younger Women Dating Older Men – What’s the Attraction?

When a movie star like Michael Douglas married a beautiful young star like Catherine Zeeta Jones, we can understand the mutual attraction, in spite of the age difference. But when our next door neighbor starts going out with a young woman, we suddenly look at them in a different light. The whispers and gossip begin.

We humans think in stereotypes. Unfortunately, our stereotypes are reinforced by the media and the media rarely informs or enlightens us, but generally just tells us what we want to hear. So many women these days are choosing older men as dates, the old “gold digger and dirty old man” stereotypes just don’t hold water anymore.

If a newspaper columnist actually went to the trouble of interviewing real people, he might come up with some surprising answers. One of the many reasons why women cite a preference for older men is because they are more mature. They like that stabilizing influence and he satisfies deeper longings for real communication than the young men she has dated could satisfy.

Brad Pitt has been voted “Sexiest man in the world” more times than anybody else. The amazing thing about this is that Brad Pitt is no longer young, but his status as a sex symbol has only grown as he has matured. It may be a hard pill to swallow, but men do seem to grow more attractive with age.

Fifty years ago it was true that wealth was something that was accumulated slowly, over time. Since the eighties, however, young men have been climbing over older men’s backs and getting to the top faster than them. The old “gold digger” myth no longer holds water, because a woman today can more easily find a wealthy young man to date than a wealthy older man.

These are just a few of the reasons for young women dating older men. There are probably as many reasons as there are men and women. One thing is clear – it’s happening a lot more often these days. It may be time for young men to worry.
